Some people feel that self care is selfish – IT IS, but in a good way. Self care is simply taking care of yourself. Taking the time to do things that make you happy, make you feel good about yourself and protect your mental space. The act of self care doesn’t have to be extravagant spa days or expensive products, though there is nothing wrong with either of those things. It can be listening to your favorite music, exercising, meditation, sleeping or just spending time alone to regroup.
Taking care of yourself seems like a no-brainer right? Wrong. Nowadays we have become so busy with our day to day lives most people forget to even consider themselves. With so many things begging for our attention it’s very easy to get distracted and forget about ourselves. Let’s get real, if you are not taking the time to care for yourself you won’t be able to care for others or be your best self. When you become over stressed and burnt out you simply cannot help anyone.
Caring For Myself
I’m an introvert, so being around people all the time is exhausting for me. This can be hard to avoid if you have a full time job or if your daily life involves being in contact with people all the time. Self care is a way for me to de-stress, refocus and function to the best of my abilities.
Fortunately for me self care was introduced to me at an early age. I was never made to feel like taking care of myself was selfish. My self care routines have evolved over the years as my schedule and priorities have changed. Some of my daily self care rituals include drinking my favorite tea, listening to music while working and reading. Weekly I do face masks, exfoliation, hair treatments, exercise and take time for myself. Monthly I try to do at least one big ticket item like facials, massages, body scrubs, mani/pedis and going to the salon. Each single activity may not seem that significant but when combined in a routine they do wonders for your personal health and well being.
It’s best to incorporate self care into your daily routine. But if you feel like it may be too much of a commitment try once a week or once a month. Do what works best for you. The bottom line is, you should be planning self care time for yourself. You know what works best for you and what areas of your life you need more care in. Think about things that make you feel happy, then make time to do those things.
