FOOD: Shima @ The Island House

Located in The Island House; Shima offers south-east asian/asian fusion dishes.

Shima boasts:

“Sophisticated and relaxed open-air dining featuring the fresh, vibrant flavors of Southeast Asian cuisine.”

and in my opinion they live up to those claims!

The atmosphere and decor is well thought out and the views are stunning from both verandah’s especially during the sunset hours. The food, the service and the views were above and beyond what I expected.

I visited Shima with and we had a tasting menu set for us, I loved every single dish we were served.

Shima - Pork & Prawn Dumplings

The staff was amazing, helpful and knowledgeable about all of the dishes, which was very important because we had a few food allergies at our table. I have food allergies and was never excluded or left out of trying a dish. The chef made modifications that allowed me to try everything, with the exception of the entree. He ended up preparing a different dish for me.

The menu we sampled:

  • Minced chicken larb, roast rice, mint, lime
  • Spicy corn and coriander fritters, chili jam
  • Pork and prawn dumplings, ginger, chili, black vinegar dressing
  • Chicken & crab salad, green papaya, coconut nahm jim
  • (entree) Massaman curry, coconut braised beef brisket confit shallots, kipfler potatos + jasmin rice
  • (Entree substitution) Thai green curry, chicken, baby corn, pea eggplant, Thai basil, kaffir lime

The thing I enjoyed most about all of the dishes was that although most of them contained many different elements and ingredients, you could still taste all of the flavors included in each dish. The spice was just right for my taste buds but others thought the food was a bit too spicy.

Shima - Grilled Roti

Overall my favorite dishes were the Thai green curry, the grilled roti and the pork and prawn dumplings.

Not only was I impressed with the food, I was blown away by the modifications they were willing to make to our dishes for everyone that had food allergies. I will definitely be back and I highly recommend giving this place a try.
