8 Tips for Protecting Your Skin This Summer

So it’s basically summertime all year round here in The Bahamas. Even though summer officially starts June 21st, It’s already crazy hot here and the sun is always blazing. Protecting your skin is very important to avoid sunburn and premature aging. Here are a few tips for keeping your skin protected this summer and year-round because we know it’s always hot here.

1. Layer Your Products

Nowadays there are primers, face creams, tinted moisturizers that all have SPF. You can even opt for a tinted moisturizer. Work these products into your daily routine to keep your skin protected from the harsh UV rays. I use my Eucerin daily protection moisturizer with 30 SPF every day even if I won’t be in the sun.

2. Wear Clothing That Protects Your Skin

You don’t have to look silly covered head to toe in hot clothing. There are a number of companies that make stylish swimsuits and rash guards. I’ve even seen swimsuits that claim to provide SPF protection up to a certain number if you try it out let me know. Protecting your skin is important, but know we still want to look cute. I found the cutest rashguard from Roxy for those long days in the sun.

3. Hats

Hats are really important, something wide brimmed is best. People tend to forget to put sunblock on the ears and don’t realize that you can also sunburn your scalp. This added layer of protection will keep your face, ears and scalp safe.

4. Sunglasses

Our eyes need protection from the sun as well. Try to get sunglasses that have a UV filter. You can find a lot of stylish and affordable sunglasses in stores and online. This will minimize wrinkles around the eyes later on in life.

5. Carry Sunblock With You

Applying sunblock once and calling it a day is not enough, especially if you’re in the water. You should be reapplying every 2 hours. I like to buy a sport high-performance formula, these are usually water resistant and last much longer than regular sun block. Two of my favorites are Ocean Potion Clear Zinc Oxide for my face & Coppertone Sport High Performance Spray.

6. Try To Find Shade

I know a lot of people go to the beach to get a tan. But it’s important to find or create a shady spot. This is the best way to protect your skin against sunburn. If there are no trees a pop-up tent may be an option.

7. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is important, constant exposure to the sun can dehydrate your skin. Not having enough water can leave you with dry lips, heat rash and even heat stroke. I use a Swell bottle, this keeps water cold up to 24 hours (tested it and it does) longer if you add ice. I don’t know about you but I HATE drinking hot water on a HOT day.

8. After Sun Care

Caring for your skin after a day in the sun is essential for preventing wrinkles and premature skin aging. A cool shower or bath will help to prepare your skin for an after sun balm or gel. I use the Sun Bum Cool down gel to add moisture back to my skin and to soothe any burns I may have. The aloe, vitamin E and tea tree oil feel amazing after a long day in the sun, you can literally feel the heat leaving your body. Bonus: Store in the fridge, it feels 10x better.

What do you do to protect your skin during the summer? Are there any tips you have for me that I missed on this list? Let me know in the comments.
